Tuesday - April 5th

''Erebuni'' (Russian / Armenian ) Restaurant. 7.45 pm. Lancaster Gate. London. W2.

A novel but effective approach to the service industry. Take your seats, peruse the menu and when you are ready to order, depress the gold button above. Fancy another bottle of wine? Same again. Simply depress the button. Need the bill? Ditto.

I belong to an ''alphabet'' dinner club (6 of us) whereby on the first Tuesday of each month someone from the group organises a dinner at a restaurant serving food from that country whose name corresponds with the letter of the alphabet we are at. Obviously last night reflected the fact we are at ''R".  I would definitely go back to 'Erebuni's' but on a Friday or Saturday night as I imagine it would boot off ''Russian style''. What drew me to that conclusion? The large karaoke machine standing disconsolate in the corner and the twin set of 72 inch plasma screens on the restaurant wall that last night were showing muted Russian MTV broadcast love ballads as a backdrop to our dining. The complimentary raspberry vodka shot at meal end was also a clue that things might get colourful on a non-school night.
